ISCA Summer Bible study on Jesus' teaching on how to pray

There is a great comic strip about a young man named Calvin who want’s it to snow bad. He begs, commands, trys to manipulate the “Snow God” and even prayers. You can find the comic here and then read below what Jesus has to say about prayer.

Matthew 6:5-13

5 “And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. 7 And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

9 “This, then, is how you should pray:

“‘Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name,

10 your kingdom come,

your will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.

11 Give us today our daily bread.

12 And forgive us our debts,

as we also have forgiven our debtors.

13 And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from the evil one.’

Questions for Discussion

1.  Read the Comic and then Matthew 6

2.  What from the passage would help Calvin in the comic learn to pray better?

3.  What does Calvin do wrong?

4.  How are we like Calvin?

5.  What else does Jesus challenge us to do in prayer?

6.  Look at Jesus’ model prayer (vs. 9-13).

7.  Outline the prayer and discuss how we can use this model prayer in our prayers.

8.  Take a moment to pray this prayer.

Luke 11:1-13 Small Group questions

Luke 11:1-13 Small Group Questions 11  One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.” 2  He said to them, “When you pray, say: “‘ Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come. 3  Give us each day our daily bread. 4  Forgive us our sins,     for we also forgive everyone who sins against us. And lead us not into temptation.’” 5  Then Jesus said to them, “Suppose you have a friend, and you go to him at midnight and say, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves of bread;  6  a friend of mine on a journey has come to me, and I have no food to offer him.’  7  And suppose the one inside answers, ‘Don’t bother me. The door is already locked, and my children and I are in bed. I can’t get up and give you anything.’  8  I tell you, even though he will not get up and g...
